New Year 2020 Goals For MamMaw
In my previous blog post I spoke about the importance of giving with purpose. As we move into the New Year 2020, resolutions are at the forefront of conversations. So, I thought I’d write about how planning ahead can help you reach your goals.

Planning Ahead

To Do List
Goal setting has been part of my routine since my youth. My pen and paper were like my best friends! I’d write tasks, from shopping to designing dresses for clients. Once completed, I’d tick it off with a red pen. Nowadays, I tend to write goals on my phone. But the premise remains.
A Visual Learner

Kaleidoscope drawing
As a visual learner that brainstorms through colour and shapes, I feel accomplished when seeing my goals ticked. It makes them seem more tangible. I think it’s a useful tactic for anyone to offload plans in their head, onto an external place that you can revisit. That way, there’s less pressure to memorise everything in your head. As you can tell, I’m a big advocate for list-making! It encourages me to move forward and reach my goals. Although I’ve always loved learning, I didn’t enjoy the traditional setting of a school. I felt like the teachers didn’t really like me and the other kids. When in class, I’d often scribble kaleidoscope style drawings, similar to Ankara prints, in my notebook during class. These were all hints that I’m more of a visual learner.

Inspiration

Marcus Garvey
Becoming a professional fashion designer has always been THE GOAL for me. Inspirations from people like Jamaican political activist Marcus Garvey, who had an unapologetic stance on African Pride & a progressive determination of self-reliance, influenced me as a child. I still very much have that independent mindset, also growing up Rastafarian.

Muhammed Ali
I also admired Mohammed Ali. His boldness was exactly what I needed to see as a shy child, who didn’t like what she saw in the mirror. Lisa Nichols is a recent inspiration of mine. Her micro-win approach is something I was doing with my list-making before I even discovered it was really a thing!
